Our predecessors

The history of the Moscow Armenian Theatre is rooted in an early 20-ies of XX century, when the house is a well-known Armenian benefactors graphs Lazarev began to work the Second (Armenian) theater drama Studio, headed by Lenin Suren Khachaturov (the elder brother of composer Aram Khachaturian).

In the Studio as the teachers worked the best representatives of culture, science and art V. Y. Bryusov, A. K. Dzhivelegov. N. I. Marr, I. A. Orbeli, G. B. Yakulov, etc.

An invaluable contribution to the development of the Studio and the theatre was made by K. S. Stanislavsky, who taught the students the culture of speech and drama, and also put young Armenian actors performances.

A special role in the development of the Armenian theater and work with actors belongs to the E. B. Vakhtangov.

the Theatre was opened may 31, 1922 with the premiere of "rose Valley", (based on the play by A. Aharonian and M. Manvelyan) supplied by Suren Khachaturov E. B. Vakhtangov.

Being responsible for the theatre group and the inability (as a huge health and employment) to lead the theatre, the Vakhtangov E. B. drew on the work of his student Ruben Simonov, who later headed it.

Simonov, in turn, attracted to work in the Studio of the Armenian bright students of Vakhtangov theatre: Rappoport, Zavadsky, Shchukin, Kudryavtseva.

In creative collaboration with the Rappaport, Simonov on court of spectators have presented five performances: "Uncle Bagdasar", "Eastern dentist", "highly Respected beggars" by A. Paronyan, "Pepo" and "Khatabala" by G. Sundukyan.

The plays "Uncle Bagdasar" (1927), "Khatabala" (1928) and "the Eastern dentist" (1928). Aram Khachaturian composed the music.

the Theatre toured the regions of Russia and Transcaucasia.

Together with the Armenian colleagues in the performances was attended by prominent Moscow theater - im Moskvin, E. N. Gogolev, V. N. Yakhontov, V. I. Kachalov.

In 1946, R.N. Simonov organized the work of directing courses, taught by famous masters - Mikhail Romm, Sergei Yutkevich, Gerasimov. Here were educated many of the Directors of theatre and cinema of Russia and Armenia.

Cultural and educational life in the House of Lazarev was in full swing and evolved until 1952, and was savagely interrupted by the efforts of supporter of the Stalinist regime of Lavrentiy Beria.

New history of the theatre


In 2002, exactly fifty years after closing, begins new story theater.

the Disciple and companion of S. Parajanov, theatre Director and actor Stepanyan has recreated the Studio and the theatre in the Lazarev house(where it was based in 2002 with the founding until 2010), continuing his great ancestors, keeping the tradition of their Studio and theater work.
